A youth opened fire at a market near Baithakkhana Road in central Calcutta after being asked to pay for the fish he and his companion had “bought”. No one was injured.
Fish trader Sanjay Sau opened his stall at Sisir Market, also known as Baithakkhana Bazar, near Surendranath College around 3.30am.
Witnesses said minutes later two youths arrived on a motorcycle and asked Sau to pack two fish weighing over 10kg.
“When Sau asked for money, one of them pulled out a gun,” said Jagan, a shopkeeper at the market. The duo dropped the fish and fled when Sau raised the alarm.
“One of the youths fired at Sau when he started running after their motorbike but missed his target. A probe has been initiated,” said an officer of Muchipara police station.
