Kamrup Metro triumph

Guwahati, Dec. 2: Home district Kamrup Metro ruled the roost in the fifth inter-district lawn bowls championship, organised by Assam Lawn Bowling Association, that concluded at Sarusajai sports complex green here today.

The Kamrup Metro team emerged overall champions in the tournament, while Kamrup Rural finished first runners-up and Udalguri and Sivasagar counterparts shared the third spot.

Barring the men’s triple event, the Kamrup Metro teams clinched the gold medals in all the other three events.

Youngster Anindita Kakoti was adjudged the most promising player.

Giving away the prizes at the closing ceremony, sports minister Ajit Singh said steps would be initiated to protect the greens in Sarusajai, the only lawn bowls synthetic infrastructure in eastern India.

“I am happy that lawn bowls has been keeping Assam’s flag flying high in the national and international arena and it is our government’s duty to provide logistic support to the sport for its development,” the minister said.

Sports Authority of India Guwahati centre’s regional director Meena Bora also assured the organisers of all possible support to develop the sport in the state.

The prizes for the three group ranking tournaments were also presented at the same ceremony.
