Long and slow death in train fall

Dec. 2: A woman died after falling off a train as it was pulling into Kanpur station yesterday, remaining trapped between the coach and the platform for over 30 minutes till life drained out of her.

Conflicting accounts emerged on how Punam Gulati, 41, fell. Her family and witnesses said she was pushed by other passengers as she stood near the door waiting to get off the crowded Intercity Express on which she was returning from hometown Lucknow.

But station manager R.N. Trivedi said she had tried to alight before the train had stopped completely.

Mother Vimala, who was travelling with Punam and son Vipin, alleged railway negligence in rescue. “We requested the railway personnel to save her but help came too late. Some students on way to an exam had pushed her,” Vimala said.

Other witnesses blamed the insufficient height of the platform for the tragedy and said such incidents had occurred earlier.
