The state government has issued a showcause notice to West Bengal State University vice-chancellor (VC) Kaushik Gupta for dismissing registrar Rampada Bera, state higher education minister Bratya Basu told the Assembly on Monday.
“The government will ask the VC to reinstate Bera if he fails to come up with a satisfactory explanation,” Basu said.
The VC removed Bera on November 25 for allegedly misappropriating funds and misbehaving with a woman employee of a Sonarpur college.
Two days later the state government sought an explanation from the VC.
“We have asked the VC whether he had issued a show-cause notice to the registrar, whether the issue was placed before the university’s executive council and whether he had informed the state higher education department about his decision,” Basu said.
The minister said the government would consider the next course of action if the VC refused to follow the state government’s instructions.
Tarun Naskar, an SUCI member and a mechanical engineering teacher at Jadavpur University, had raised the issue during Question Hour.
“The VC has the freedom to sack a university staff. But the way Bera was removed is unprecedented,” said a government source.
Gupta had issued the order to dismiss the registrar after a committee probing the twin charges had held Bera guilty.
