Balurghat, Dec. 1: A newly married couple were found dead in the groom’s house this morning, a few hours after the wedding reception got over.
The incident took place at Jayantipur near Hili.
While the groom was found hanging, the bride’s body was on the bed that had been decorated for the couple’s phool-shojja (first night).
Today, the bride’s relatives demonstrated when police arrived to take the bodies alleging foul play.

Today, around 8am, Sanjay’s relatives tried waking up the newly-weds. But even after repeated knocks, no one answered. One of the family members managed to open a window of the room and found Sanjay hanging from the ceiling. Other relatives broke open the door only to see the bride lying dead.
Sanjay’s father Susil, a farmer, said: “Everything looked normal last night. They looked happy. We do not know what happened.”
Sanjay was a fish trader in Jayantipur, 26km from here.
The marriage had been fixed around six months ago.
Bulti was from Jakirpur Shibtala near Kumarganj. Her father is a farmer.
“Sanjay called Bulti almost everyday. They had no objections to the marriage,” said Pabitra Roy, Sanjay’s relative.
Today, the bride’s relatives demonstrated in front of the police. “We were told about the incident much later. The matter should be investigated properly,” said Bulti’s relative.
Matius Lepcha, block development officer of Hili, said there was a scratch mark on the bride’s neck. Prasun Banerjee, police chief of South Dinajpur, said: “We have sent both the bodies for post-mortem.”
