HSDP firm on statehood

- Party gives call to teach Cong a lesson at ‘biggest’ rally

Nagaon, Dec. 1: The Hills State Democratic Party (HSDP) today warned the Congress to stop corruption and anti-people activities in the two hill districts of Assam, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, as it is standing in the way of development of the region.

The party leadership today addressed a mass rally in Diphu, the headquarters of Karbi Anglong district, where in the presence of more than 30,000 party workers, the HSDP decided to go ahead with its separate state demand.

“The people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao have continued their democratic movement for a separate state for a long time but the Congress-led government in Dispur and New Delhi have only played games with the people of the region. The Congress leadership in the two autonomous councils have also played a mysterious role which is only in the interest of their party,” said former Dima Hasao autonomous council chief executive member, Debulal Hojai.

Hojai, accompanied by members of the party leadership from Dima Hasao, joined the mass rally which HSDP touted as the biggest as part of their preparation for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

HSDP chief Chomang Kro presided over the rally. Two former legislators, elected HSDP council members Jagat Singh Ingti and Dharam Singh Teron, participated in the rally. The party leadership came down heavily upon the Congress for misrule and largescale corruption of developmental funds and warned that the people of the two hill districts must teach the Congress a very good lesson in the days to come.

“There is hatred in the minds of everyone in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao as since Independence, during its rule, the Congress has only paved the way for corruption. Drainage of natural resources of the two hill districts, failure to bring a ray of development and above all its divide and rule policy has stood as a hurdle before the unity and integrity of the region,” said HSDP leader Alvin Teron.

Teron said HSDP would soon launch its mass movement to uphold the separate state demand in a democratic way. “We want the participation of all classes of people in the greater interest of fulfilling the long cherished dream of the people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.”

Interestingly, the Congress leadership of Karbi Anglong today arranged an emergency conclave to launch a parallel movement for a separate state.

A party source today said a new platform, United Forum for Hills State, was formed today to launch the movement.

“The demand for a separate state is the biggest issue at the moment in the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency,” the Congress source said.

If the party does not change its political strategy along with this, it might damage us in the upcoming Lok Sabha poll,” the Congress source said.
