Calcutta: Mohammedan Sporting’s profligate ways came to haunt them once again as they were held goalless by Dempo Sports Club at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday. This was Mohammedan Sporting’s third consecutive barren tie in the I-League.
Mohammedan Sporting could have won by at least a couple of goals had their forwards not squandered those gilt-edged opportunities. Tolgay Ozebe was the worst offender forcing the coach to replace him in the 52nd minute.
For Dempo, this was a moral victory of sorts. Without five of their regulars, they lost Beto in the 11th minute following a groin injury.
The match had to be stopped for two minutes in the second session after fire-crackers went off in the stands.
Tolgay then squandered the easiest of chances in the 40th minute. Collin Abranches’ cross from the right deflected off a Dempo defender and landed in front of Tolgay inside the box. With only the goalkeeper to beat, the Australian shot over.
Mohammedan Sporting appealed for a penalty when Joshimar was brought down inside the box in the 72nd minute but the referee overlooked it.
