Silchar, Nov. 30: A 19-year-old student of Assam University’s social works department has accused her 20-year-old classmate of sexually assaulting her, prompting the authorities to form an internal panel yesterday to probe the case.
University sources said the girl had lodged a written complaint with the department’s head, Subhabrata Dutta, on November 25, the day the incident allegedly took place.
The victim, in her complaint, a copy of which is with The Telegraph, wrote that her 20-year-old classmate, “tried to make intimate relationship with me without my consent. He forcefully tried to outrage my modesty. The incident happened within the university complex.”
But Dutta asked her to sort out the matter and tried to underplay the issue, her family members alleged.
The next day, the victim’s father met Dutta and sought immediate action against the accused but he allegedly ignored the plea and again advised reconciliation. The victim’s father disclosed the matter to the higher authorities yesterday. Dutta could not be contacted for comment.
Assam University vice- chancellor Somnath Dasgupta told this correspondent, “I have formed an investigation committee which will be headed by assistant professor of life science department, Sharbani Giri. I have instructed the committee members to submit the report by Tuesday. I hope we will be able to dig out the truth soon.”
Sources said the official doctor of the university had examined the girl.
The university’s pro-vice-chancellor, K.V. Nagaraja, said, “These issues are very sensitive. Only after the committee submits its report will we be able to take any action.”
Assam University Students Union vice-president Dipendra Kumar Khanal said, “The issue is not that big and the matter is being politicised. But I agree that if something bad has happened to someone, he/she should get justice”.
