Malda DM grilled in graft case

Siliguri, Nov. 29: The Malda district magistrate, G. Kiran Kumar, was interrogated for seven hours here today by Siliguri Metropolitan Police in connection with alleged anomalies in payments to private contractors during his stint at the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority as the chief executive officer.

“He (Kumar) was questioned at the detective department office of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police. The interrogation was in connection with a case filed by the SJDA authorities (for payment of Rs 50 crore to private construction firms for projects which were not completed). He might be interrogated tomorrow and has not yet been arrested,” said K. Jayaraman, the police commissioner. ”

Ten persons, including four engineers of the SJDA and representatives of some private construction firms, had been arrested for their alleged role in the graft. Three of them are still behind bars.

Around 30 DYFI workers shouted slogans demanding Kumar’s arrest outside the Siliguri police station where he was being questioned.
