Siliguri, Nov. 29: A girl and her 17-year-old cousin brother, who was accompanying her to school this morning, were attacked by four youths near her house.

The 13-year-old student, who had an exam today, said two of the attackers had been teasing her for the past few days and today her parents had asked the cousin brother to drop her to school.

The girl’s parents have lodged an FIR at the Pradhannagar police station alleging assault.

According to the Class VI student, for the past four days, two youths in their early 20s, had been teasing her. “I know two of the attackers because they live in our locality. They are Sachin and Sushil Gupta. They drive mini vans that carry LPG cylinders. They would pass comments at me and block the way whenever I would go to school. I had told my parents about this and today they asked my cousin to take me to school,” said the girl.

Her annual examination is going on and today was the third language (Bengali) paper.

The girl and her cousin left home around 9.30am. “We were about to reach the main road, a five-minute walk from the house, to take an autorickshaw to school when Sachin, Sushil and two others, whom I don’t know, accosted us. One of them had a long and sharp knife. They held my cousin by the collar and started hitting him in the chest and stomach with their hands. They pushed and shoved me around and a button of my shirt came off. They slapped me and I fell to the ground,” said the girl.

She raised the alarm hearing which, a traffic policeman arrived at the spot. Seeing the policeman, the youths fled. The policeman took the girl to Darjeeling More in a police van and got an autorickshaw so that she could be dropped to school.

The cousin brother said: “I am from Bihar and have come here for a vacation. After the attackers fled, I called up my relatives who admitted me to the Siliguri district hospital.”

When the headmistress of the girl’s school heard about the incident, she informed the police. “The girl had bruises on the legs. I dialled 100 to inform the police and they came to take her statement. After the exam, we took the girl to the Siliguri district hospital for treatment,” she said.

Doctors said the girl had suffered external injuries and the boy had injuries in the stomach and chest. “We are running tests to see if the boy has suffered any internal injury. The girl has suffered bruises and cuts,” a doctor said.

The police said they were looking for the four youths. “We have got an FIR alleging assault. Raids are on to arrest the attackers,” an officer of Pradhannagar police station said.
