Train driver averts disaster

Guwahati, Nov. 29: An alert loco pilot of a goods train averted a disaster last night in the Katihar division of Northeast Frontier Railway.

The loco pilot, M. Ansari, was driving a goods train loaded with petroleum products when at 10.40pm he spotted a fire at the end of the engine while it was between Barsoi and Mukuria stations in the New Jalpaiguri-Malda section.

“He immediately stopped the train and with the help of assistant loco pilot Dinesh Kumar and guard R.K. Choudhury, detached the locomotive from the train and drove it about 150 metres away,” said S. Lahiri, chief public relation officer of NFR.

Fire brigade personnel from Raiganj, Purnea and Katihar were informed and the Katihar divisional railway manager along with the divisional officers rushed to the site. The fire was finally doused around 5 this morning.

Lahiri said four railway employees received burn injuries ranging from nine per cent to 32 per cent but all are out of danger. However, three of the injured have been referred to the Burn Centre at Patna by the KIR Railway Hospital for further treatment.

The blocked train line delayed the movement of trains but it resumed by afternoon.
