Guwahati, Nov. 27: Smritirekha Kalita of NETV emerged champion defeating Anu Boro of Assam Photo Journalists Association 11-0, 11-3 in the womenís category final of the Arabinda Buragohain Badminton Championship of the fifth Northeast Media Sports Festival. The meet is being organised by the Assam Sports Journalists Association at Kanaklata indoor stadium here today.
In the category featuring 20 participants, Smritirekha got the better of Priyanka Kataki of DY365 while Anu Boro beat Nabanita Kalita of NETV.
On the other hand, Hildul Gogoi of Dainik Janambhumi and Binoy Kalita of DY365 sealed their place in the menís semi-finals. In the menís team event Manipur Press Club-A and Dainik Janambhumi ensured their place in the final. Manipur Press Club-A got the better of Manipur Photo Journalists Association 2-1 while Dainik Janambhumi beat News Live 2-0.
Earlier in the quarter-finals, News Live got the better of The Assam Tribune 2-0 while Manipur Photo Journalists Association beat Manipur Press Club-B 2-0. In the other two quarter-finals, Manipur Press Club-A eased past News Time Assam 2-0 while Dainik Janambhumi beat G-Plus 2-0.
Earlier in the day, P.J. Baruah, executive editor, The Assam Tribune, inaugurated the meet in the presence of Omar Rashid, secretary, Assam Badminton Association.
The table tennis championship of the weeklong sports festival will get under way at ABITA Indoor Stadium tomorrow, along with the football championship at New Field.
Feted: The Imphal West District Badminton Association feted Meiraba Luwang who bagged the under-13 National Badminton Championship and also the 27th Sub-Junior Badminton Championship in Cuttack.
