6 killed in blast near nuke plant

The Kudankulam plant

Chennai, Nov. 26: Six persons, including two children, were killed in an explosion at a village near the Kudankulam nuclear power plant this evening.

Police said the blast occurred when country bombs were being prepared in a house at Tsunami Nagar of Indinthakarai village, less than a kilometre from the outermost perimeter of the nuclear plant. The blast destroyed four houses and injured eight persons.

As the residents of Indinthakarai, the hub of protests against the nuclear power plant, had barricaded the village to prevent the police from entering, the authorities were unable to rush ambulances and fire engines immediately after the blast.

However, two ambulances and four police vehicles managed to reach the village after the roadblocks were removed, Tirunelveli district collector M. Karunakaran said.

The police said the fishermen of Indinthakarai had often settled scores with rival groups in nearby fishing villages using homemade country bombs.
