Gun victim gains senses

Tata Steel employee Vipul Kumar, who was shot at in Northern Town on Saturday night and had been under critical care since, was taken off ventilator late on Monday evening.

East Singhbhum SSP Amol V. Honkar visited Kumar at Tata Main Hospital (TMH) on Tuesday morning and spoke to him for 30 minutes.

Honkar confirmed that police had finally managed to record the victim’s statement, but refused to divulge details for the sake of investigations.

“We have recorded the statement of Vipul Kumar. However, we cannot say anything at the moment because it may jeopardise our probe,” the SSP said.

On what might be the motive behind the grievous attack, an officer added: “Maybe, the victim knowingly or unknowingly caused harm to someone in the recent past. The attack on him could be the fallout.”

The SSP further said that they were compiling call details from cellphones, including one that belonged to Kumar, and trying to corroborate recorded conversations with the victim’s statement. “We are also interrogating some half a dozen suspects,” he added.

Kumar was shot at and injured by two unidentified gunmen on a bike near The United Club in Northern Town, Bistupur, around 8pm on November 23.

T.P. Madhusudanan, general manager (medical services) at TMH, on Tuesday said Kumar’s condition was stable, but he would remain in CCU for the next few days.
