Tourism secy faces summons

Dassam Falls

Ranchi, Nov. 25: Jharkhand High Court summoned tourism secretary Sajal Chakraborty tomorrow to explain usage of funds received from Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) in the light of poor facilities at major tourist attractions across the state.

Today, a division bench of Justice D.N. Patel and Justice P.P. Bhatt was hearing a PIL filed by Babloo Kumar who alleged that while ITDC was shelling out crores of rupees to Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation (JTDC) for promoting tourism, there was little or no facilities available for visitors at major sites across the state.

JTDC, Kumar claimed, had merely made plans and projects on paper without utilising the funds from the Centre properly. In reality, nothing concrete had been done for executing various tourism promotion projects, he said in his petition.

The judges commented that the officers in the state weren’t interested in working. They were merely withdrawing their salary at the end of the month.

The judges noted that the Dassam Falls, a popular tourist spot in the outskirts of the state capital, did not have a washroom for women.

This left a bad impression on tourists who came to the falls to enjoy nature at its best, the court observed.
