Affair whiff in Bistupur shooting

An extramarital affair is emerging as the possible reason behind Tata Steel area officer Vipul Kumar (40) being shot at and injured in front of The United Club in Northern Town, Bistupur, on Saturday evening.

City SP Kartik S. said that though nothing concrete could be said about the relationship yet, extensive probe suggested that Kumar might have been involved with a girl. “Investigations hint at an extramarital affair that led to the gun attack. People are being interrogated.”

The SP added that police needed to record Kumar’s statement before drawing any conclusion. “We are working on the clues available with us and will take the victim’s statement once he is able to speak to us. The matter will be clear only after that.”

The steel company’s Kashidih area officer, who was operated on to remove a bullet from his lower abdomen, is still unconscious and is being monitored in the critical care unit of Tata Main Hospital (TMH).

“He has not been removed from the ventilator yet. We are mulling options,” said TMH general manager (medical services) T.P. Madhusudanan who had on Sunday maintained that not much could be said before 72 hours.

Kumar, a former lawn tennis coach, has been working in the company’s urban services department, which looks after community development and social welfare centres, for four years. He stayed at New Baradwari in Sakchi, close to the community centre in Kashidih, before shifting to Sonari.

Police suspect the girl in question and the two shooters on a bike may be residents of Kashidih. Six suspects have been detained for interrogation.

In a related development, SSP Amol V. Honkar has launched a random arms-checking drive at strategic locations across the city. Police parties, comprising women constables, are also keeping an eye on girls on two-wheelers. Their bags are being thoroughly checked.

“The drive is routine to keep criminals at bay,” Honkar said when asked if it was a targeted hunt for Saturday’s shooters.
