Das puts Assam in forefront

CK Nayudu Trophy

Guwahati, Nov. 22: Pacer Krishna Das accounted for five dismissals, including a run out, to help Assam A bowl out hosts Madhya Pradesh A for a modest 240 in 85.2 overs in the first innings of their CK Nayudu Trophy under-25 plate group B encounter at Rewa today.

Assam were one for no loss in two overs at the end of the first day’s play in the four-day affair.

The home side had a steady opening with Rishabh Tiwari (38, 6x4) and A. Khan (30, 4x4) sharing a 62-run partnership before the former missed a turner from offie Prasanta Sonowal to be bowled. Khan followed Tiwari back to the dressing room soon after falling short to a direct hit by Das. Reduced to 75 for two in the morning session, V. Verma (16, 3x4) and A. Bais (63, 8x4) stepped in and managed to negotiate the Assam bowling attack for some time before Sonowal picked up Verma.

Bais and next batsman A. Singh (26, 4x4) shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 69 runs, till Sonowal struck again to pick up his third wicket in Bais. Das, who was not successful as Sonowal in the first two sessions, made no mistake in exploiting the conditions after tea claiming Singh, caught behind by Rajdeep Das.

Thereafter, the lanky pacer served blow after blow rattling the hosts’ lower middle order and the tail to return with the figures of four for 68. Sonowal had three for 65 and skipper Amit Sinha chipped in with two for 12. P. Sahani (34, 6x4) was the only other Madhya Pradesh batsman to negotiate the visitors’ pace-spin attack.

Spinner Bikram Chetry replaced pacer Samik Das in the Assam playing XI for the match, in view of the conditions.
