Villagers protest cop inaction

Guwahati, Nov. 22: Residents of Punioni village in Sonitpur district, about 12km from Tezpur, staged a protest today against the inability of police to arrest those involved in the gang rape of a woman from the village in July this year.

The victim, who had been undergoing treatment for multiple injuries at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) since the incident, died on Wednesday. The police brought her body to the village today, where local residents carried out her last rites.

The 40-year-old had been rushed to Kanaklata civil hospital in Tezpur in July after the villagers found her in an unconscious state. The civil hospital staff subsequently referred her to GMCH.

Since the woman had no family, her neighbours and other villagers had visited her while she was at the hospital, which was providing her free treatment.

“The victim had been receiving treatment for multiple injuries since July. Despite our best efforts, we could not save her. After her death, no family member came forward to claim her body. Hence, we handed her body over to the police,” said GMCH superintendent Ramen Talukdar.

The district magistrate, who was present during the cremation, said the culprits would be booked within five days.
