Kiss cop axed

Calcutta, Nov. 21: Ajahar Ali, a 34-year-old Calcutta police constable who was sentenced to six months imprisonment by the Supreme Court 18 years after he grabbed and kissed a girl in Malda, was sacked today.

Rajeev Mishra, the joint commissioner of police, headquarters, said Ali, who had surrendered before Malda police, was sacked after a report from the superintendent of police, Malda, reached the Lalbazar police headquarters. “We asked the Malda police superintendent to conduct an inquiry after the news of Ali’s conviction reached here. We needed an official document to take action against him. The inquiry report reached us this afternoon confirming Ali’s conviction,” said Mishra.

According to rule book, if any policeman is found guilty of committing a cognisable offence, the person is sacked immediately.
