Phensedyl seized in Meghalaya

Shillong, Nov. 21: Four persons were arrested last night from Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district along National Highway 40 after 3,700 bottles of Phensedyl were recovered.

Police said Rajiv Debnath, 33, Mahadev Sutradhar, 35, Narayan Acharjee, 40 and Apu Saha, 35, were arrested from two vehicles with fake registration numbers (Scorpio-ML-04A-9950 and Mahindra Xylo-Tr-01-AS-0715) at Shangbangla under Nongpoh police station, about 5km from here. During preliminary investigations, the alleged smugglers divulged that the Phensedyl bottles were meant to be smuggled to Tripura. The consignment had come from Calcutta.

The codeine-containing cough syrup is used to manufacture narcotic drugs.

In August this year, the BSF seized more than 5,000 bottles of Phensedyl along Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district. The consignment was to be delivered to Silchar in Assam’s Cachar district. A BSF official said 5,940 bottles of Phensedyl worth Rs 5,19,750 were recovered from the truck.
