BDO released, three abductors in cop net

Dhubri, Nov. 21: Rashidul Haque, in-charge block development officer of South Salmara development block of Dhubri district who was abducted yesterday, was released today at Gaibandha under Lakhipur police station in Goalpara district.

Three persons were arrested in this connection.

Dhubri police arrested Sofiqul Islam, Hafizur Islam and Ashadul Rahman, who were allegedly involved in the abduction of Haque from Dhumerghat in Goalpara district.

Haque was returning home at Lakhipur by autorickshaw from South Salmara of Dhubri district.

The trio were interrogated by senior police officials, including Dhubri superintendent of police Mridulananda Sarma in Dhubri police station (Sadar), before being handed over to Lakhipur police of Goalpara district.

Dhubri police station officer-in-charge Manik Kalita said they had got specific information about the movement of three persons allegedly involved in the abduction of the BDO.

“We got inputs that the trio were coming to Dhubri by boat from Fakirganj and accordingly, when the boat reached Dhubri Newghat, we caught them and brought them to the police station for interrogation,” Kalita added.

Kalita said during interrogation the trio revealed the name of an underground organisation.

He, however, did not disclose its name.

Learning about the arrest of the three, others who had kept Haque in captivity, probably released Haque fearing action against them, Kalita said.

Haque was to hand over the charge to a newly posted BDO yesterday but he left office for his home early, an official source said.
