Masters bring out the best, narrate life’s tests
- Anupam Kher and Anand Kumar share platform on book release, go down memory lane

It was meeting of two titans. One plays character roles on the silver screen, while the other builds characters.

Super30 founder Anand Kumar on Thursday evening released a book titled “Aap khud hi best hain”, the Hindi version of “The best thing about you is you” penned by actor Anupam Kher at the Patna Book Fair.

The motivational book consists of Kher’s experience and how he attained success, overcoming failures initially. The actor said: “It could not have been a better coincidence that the book in Patna is being released by mathematician Anand Kumar, who is a source of inspiration for thousands and, like me, he, too, had to struggle hard to attain success.”

Anand, too, shared his experience of living in abject poverty and how he overcame obstacles. Anand said he had to sell papad after the death of his father in the 90s, as his family was not financially sound. The actor who has received numerous awards said: “I have chosen the title of book “Aap khud hi best hain’ as everyone has a quality. One only needs to discover it.” Kher narrated events from his school days. He recollected that his father used to take him to Alpha restaurant in Shimla once in six months and the fixed menu was mutton samosa, pineapple pastry and coffee.

Narrating an instance from his life, Kher said: “I was not very studious and in class XI, I failed. But my father didn’t scold me. He took me to the same restaurant to celebrate my failure. He told me that I shouldn’t be discouraged in future, even in times of failure.”

He added: “Every individual should have a goal in his life and to attain it, one should continuously strive for it.” Kher, a gold medallist from the National School of Drama, had to struggle and spent many nights on railway platforms.

Praising Kher, Anand said: “I am a great fan of Kher and I don’t miss his films. My favourite movie is Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, not because of Shah Rukh Khan or Kajol but because of Kher. The role essayed by Kher of SRK’s father reminds me of my father who always encouraged me and used to tell me not to be disappointed by failures.” Kher also delivered a memorable dialogue from his movie Karma, on public demand.

The English version of his book (The best thing about you is you), already a bestseller, was released by Amitabh Bachchan and Kirron Kher in Mumbai last year.
