Satabdi out of govt agency

Calcutta, Nov. 21: Satabdi Roy was today removed as the chairperson of Sriniketan-Santiniketan Development Authority, which sources said was the price the Trinamul MP was paying for her alleged differences with Birbhum party chief Anubrata Mondal.

An order from the urban development department reached the authority office in Bolpur today. Satabdi, who was recently served a show-cause notice following her alleged “anti-party remarks” at a blood donation camp, was replaced by Chandranath Sinha, the fisheries minister and local MLA.

“Sinha is a close aide of Mondal. His appointment makes it clear that a message has been sent to Satabdi Roy that the party’s Birbhum chief will have the last word,” a Trinamul leader said.

Although Mondal was at the centre of controversy in recent months following his inflammatory speeches during rural poll campaigns, Birbhum Trinamul did well in the panchayat elections under him — the party won 24 of the 42 zilla parishad seats.

Satabdi today told The Telegraph that she had earlier requested the chief minister to allow her to leave the post so that she could campaign for the Lok Sabha polls due next year.

“I am an MP first and I wanted to be released before the Lok Sabha polls,” she added.

A Trinamul insider said Mondal wanted Satabdi to be removed since August 2011 as he wanted to have a bigger say in real-estate projects, some of which Satabdi opposed.
