Behrampore, Oct. 31: A constable who was part of a police team that raided a hooch den in Murshidabad tonight was found dead moments after he and the others were assaulted by people drinking there.
Sumanta Haldar, 32, was found on the edge of a pond. The police suspect Haldar’s head was pushed into the water.
An assistant sub-inspector and two home guards who were the other members of the team have been admitted to Jangipur sub-divisional hospital with injuries.
An officer said residents of Jangipur’s Joyrampur area had called up the local police outpost and complained of a drunken brawl at the liquor den.
“When the four policemen raided the hooch shop on the veranda of a house, nine persons having liquor there beat them up. While the ASI and the two home guards escaped, Haldar could not break free,” the officer said.
The three cops called for reinforcements. When a large police team reached the den, it was empty. The constable’s body was found at 8.30pm. No arrest has been made yet.
