Durgapur SDO Kasturi Sengupta, who had last month held the meeting where the co-operation of Trinamul rural chiefs was sought, today said the administration would seek “help and co-operation of everybody associated with the villagers”. “It is not that we have approached only the CPM. We are seeking the help of anybody associated with the villagers to find a solution to the issue.”
At the meeting held in her office today, the local block development officer, rural body chiefs and BAPL officials were present. “We wanted to understand the mood of the villagers. But none of the farmers attended the meeting,” the SDO said.
The gram panchayat chief of Ichhapur, Trinamul’s Ujjal Mandal, who was present at the meeting, said: “I told the district administration that farmers do not want to give their land.” Mandal had requested the administration during another meeting on Sunday to call off the session after the farmers started protesting.
BAPL refused comment.
