Calcutta: Bhowanipore FC, United Sikkim FC and Langnsing FC are three new teams who will play in the Federation Cup, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced on Monday.
The AIFF has stuck to the existing format of the Federation Cup, which begins on the New year’s Day - January 1 - only for the coming season.
While Bhowanipore FC and United Sikkim are placed in Group D along with Mohammedan Sporting and Dempo SC, Langnsing will feature in Group A, which comprises Churchill Brothers, United SC and Pune FC.
Group B features Sporting Clube de Goa, East Bengal, Bangalore FC and Rangdajied United Football Club (RUFC). Mohun Bagan, Salgaocar FC, Mumbai FC and Lajong FC are clubbed in Group C.
Defending champions East Bengal will open their Federation Cup campaign against RUFC on Jan. 2. Of all competitions, the Federation Cup has been the one where East Bengal have done most things right. Out of the last six editions, East Bengal won as many as four of them.
Mohun Bagan start their campaign on the opening day of the competition against Mumbai FC while Mohammedan Sporting will begin against United Sikkim.
