Siliguri, Oct. 28: Trinamul’s Nantu Paul today filed nomination for the by election to ward 11 of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
This morning, the Congress and Trinamul candidates filed their papers for the by-polls of wards 11 and 31 scheduled for November 22.
Left Front candidates had submitted nominations on Saturday.
“Nantu Paul of Trinamul submitted his nomination from ward 11 today. Sourav Bhattacharya and Piu Bhattacharya, both from the Congress, also filed their nominations from ward 11 and 31 respectively,” said Hirak Kar, the deputy magistrate, Siliguri.
Uma Goyal and Deepa Biswas, both from the Left Front, had submitted papers from ward 11 and 31 on Saturday.
“Jana Bagchi, our candidate for ward 31, will file her nomination tomorrow,” said Krishna Pal, the general secretary of Trinamul’s Darjeeling district committee.
Ward 11 has been vacant after Paul, the former chairperson of SMC who was with the Congress earlier, resigned as the councillor on September 4. Chaitali Sensharma of ward 31 resigned in 2010 and the seat has been vacant since then.
“We had contested the last polls in alliance with the Congress. But after the result it was clear that people voted us for change under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. We are no longer with the Congress, which will be a big disadvantage for them. We are considering it as an advantage,” Nantu Paul said. “People are fed-up with the poor service from the Congress-led SMC board.”
Jeevan Majumdar, the Congress candidate against Paul, said: “It is unfortunate that instead of co-operating with the board, Trinamul always tried to create inconvenience. People are aware of that. We hope they will vote in our favour.”
