The decomposed body of an unidentified woman was fished out of Subernarekha near Domuhani along Marine Drive in Sonari area on Monday morning.
Local residents bathing in the river were the first to spot the body. They informed police who pressed divers for the job.
“The woman, aged around 28, was married. Preliminary probe suggests she died some four days ago,” said an investigating officer.
Sonari OC Sanjiv Kumar said they were yet to ascertain whether it was a case of accidental drowning, suicide or murder. “We have sent the body to MGM Medical College for post-mortem. Only after we get the autopsy report, will we be able to comment on the nature of death,” he added.
In another incident, a 50-year-old woman chose the noose over life. Manjulata Sahu, a widow and mother of two, hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her Kashidih home in Sakchi on Sunday night.
According to relatives, Manjulata was alone at home when she took the extreme step. “Her elder son Shishir was busy managing his roadside hotel at Sakchi market. When he returned home at 10.30pm, he found his mother hanging,” a relative said.
Sakchi OC I.B. Ojha said prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide. “She killed herself, but why that is what we are trying to find out.”
Sources said a domestic tiff with family members might have prompted the suicide.
The body has been sent to MGM for post-mortem.
