A six-year-old girl foiled a neighbour’s bid to kidnap her by attracting the attention of passers-by and cops on Shakespeare Sarani on Monday afternoon, police said.
The neighbour had travelled with the girl on a taxi and was walking with her down Shakespeare Sarani when he was caught by traffic cops.
Police said the accused — Mohammad Zulfiquar — had lured the girl into the taxi using chocolate as bait.
“The girl, who lives in the same Taltala Road neighbourhood as the accused, was made to get off the taxi near Shakespeare Sarani around 3pm. When the girl complained she could not walk any more, the accused slapped her. At this, the girl started shouting for help,” said an officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station.
The incident happened in front of AC market. Traffic cops posted on the stretch reacted to the girl’s cries and caught Zulfiquar.
Police sources said that after being apprehended and taken to the local police station, Zulfiquar pretended to be “mentally deranged”.
“He pretended to be mentally deranged but we could see through the game. We will verify his credentials,” said an officer investigating the case. Zulfiquar has been arrested and will be produced in court on Tuesday.
He has been booked for human trafficking and attempt to kidnap.
