Calcutta, Oct. 28: Trinamul today snatched the Sainthia municipality in Birbhum from the Congress after its 10 councillors joined the state’s ruling party.
The Congress setback, the latest in the series of civic blows, came days after the party lost the Krishnagar municipality to Trinamul because of defections.
Today, 10 Congress councillors, including the chairman Biren Parekh, joined Trinamul at the party headquarters in the presence of all-India general secretary Mukul Roy, giving Trinamul the control of the 16-member board.
The Congress has suffered heavily because of defections at the civic level. Last month, councillors from three municipalities — Dubrajpur in Birbhum, Birnagar in Nadia and Cooch Behar in north Bengal — switched to Trinamul.
