Calcutta: The opening day of the Group B Ranji Trophy tie between Bengal and Baroda was abandoned due to a wet outfield, at Eden Gardens, on Sunday.
Umpires K. Srinath and P. Jayapal took the decision after an inspection of the ground at 10am. Though the city had seen heavy rainfall till Saturday, there was no downpour on Sunday. However, with the sky donning a gloomy look, there wasn’t enough sunshine either. As a result, the ground condition at the Eden remained soggy on Sunday.
As things stand, if the sun continues to play hide and seek, it will be extremely difficult for play to begin on the second day as well. However, the organisers remain optimistic.
