Balurghat, Oct. 25: Two persons were arrested for allegedly murdering a woman whose body was found in a puja pandal in Gangarampur near here on October 13.
The accused are Debashis Singh, 35, and Palash Chakrabarty, 37, residents of Kaldighi near here.
They were produced in the the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Gangarampur today and remanded in police custody for five days.
The woman’s body was found with injury marks on the neck at the Kaldighi Sarbojonin Puja Committee’s pandal on October 13.
A woman from the locality first spotted the body and informed the police.
Later, the police sent the body for a post-mortem.
After an FIR was filed, the police arrested the night guard of the pandal and the dhak player .
During the questioning, the police came to know that Singh and Chakrabarty were behind the crime.
Singh is a known Trinamul activist in the locality and a member of the puja committee.
Trinamul has distanced itself from the accused.
“Singh has no connection with Trinamul. There is no place for such a person in our party. The law must take its own course,” said Prabir Roy, Trinamul’s district general secretary.
“Debashish Singh and his friend Palash Chakrabarty were arrested last night. Both the accused have confessed that they had committed the crime and we have a video footage of their confession. In the medical report we did not get any sign of rape,”said Prasun Banerjee, superintendent of police of South Dinajpur.
