After bloody noses, the blushes as two assistant sub-inspectors of neighbouring police stations were suspended on Thursday for their punch-up in public the previous afternoon over a bitter turf row.
The duo and their subordinates exchanged blows in front of around 50 onlookers after quarrelling over which police station should handle an accident case on the Basanti highway near Aquatica.
According to witnesses, Kazi Jahangir Alam of Calcutta Leather Complex police station had pointed his service revolver at his New Town counterpart Gauranga Nath, who had responded with a punch on Alam’s nose.
Based on a report from Kankar Prasad Barui, the additional superintendent of South 24-Parganas, and Santosh Nimbalkar, the assistant commissioner of police, airport division of Bidhannagar Commissionerate, the duo have been suspended for an indefinite period.
They will get salaries, but can’t wear the uniform and visit their police stations.
“What happened yesterday was extremely embarrassing. We are not in a position to state who was right, who was wrong, or who started the fight. But the policemen should not have fought in public. That leaves a bad image of the entire department. Hence, a strong step was taken against them,” a senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate said.
Praveen Tripathi, the superintendent of South 24-Parganas, said: “The duo would remain suspended till the departmental inquiry is completed. The order was based on the findings of senior officers who visited the spot yesterday.”
The commissionerate and the South 24-Parganas police administrations have initiated separate inquiries under deputy superintendent-rank officers.
The cops got embroiled in the brawl after a patrol from New Town arrived at Kochpukur off Aquatica on being informed about a minor accident involving a car and a motorbike around 12.30pm.
They had allegedly “settled the case” and were about to move out when their counterparts from Calcutta Leather Complex reached the spot and demanded that the case be handed over to them since the area falls within their jurisdiction. By then, those involved in the accident had left the place.
Kochpukur is on the border between New Town and Calcutta Leather Complex police stations.
An argument ensued, followed by fisticuffs. Eventually, three assistant sub-inspectors and a constable each of the two stations ended up with bloody noses.
The brawl ended after senior officers as well as political leaders arrived and took the feuding cops to New Town police station.
The senior officers had initially refused to admit the public brawl but were forced to take “stern action” against the two assistant sub-inspectors for allegedly starting the fight.
