Greater Noida: Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom is among the frontrunners for the prestigious job of waving the chequered flag in the Indian Grand Prix on Sunday, according to sources in the Jaypee Group, the organisers of the race.
“Nothing has been finalised yet, but efforts are on to rope in Mary Kom,” the source said. “She is one of the finest sportspersons in the country, and a role model for young men and women. However, there are some other names in the list, too, like film star Hrithik Roshan,” he added.
Hrithik was tipped to wave the chequered flag during the 2012 Indian GP, but expressed his inability to come at the last moment. Finally, he was replaced by London Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang. In the inaugural year in 2011, Sachin Tendulkar waved the flag.
Like the past two years, the organisers are hoping for yet another star parade on Sunday, which would include top cricketers, Olympians, film stars, models and well known politicians.
“The paddock turns into a who’s who of Indian celebrities every year and it won’t be any different this time,” said a source. “But we still don’t know who all exactly would come, as the teams also invite a lot of people. We come to known about them at the last moment.”
Among the leading cricketers, the organisers are expecting Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh to come for the race.
