Malda, Oct. 23: A pregnant lady and her husband died last night in Ratua and police suspect they committed suicide by consuming pesticide.
According to a police source, Mausumi Mondol, 25, and her husband, Gautam, 29, from Nesta village in Ratua, about 22km from here, were found on the floor of their room, writhing in pain, by Gautam’s father and younger brother.
The couple were first admitted to the Milki primary health centre and later shifted by Gautam’s father and younger brother to the Malda Medical College and Hospital where they died late last night.
The police said Mausumi was five months pregnant. Badal Poddar, Mausumi’s maternal uncle, has filed a complaint blaming her in-laws for the deaths.
Tapesh Mondol, Gautam’s father, said Gautam was the eldest of his two sons.
“I had bought Gautam a car that he gave on rent and drove himself. I gave my poultry farm and fish business to my younger son, Dipankar. I am stunned that my son and his wife committed suicide all of a sudden,” the father said.
According to Badal Poddar, he had brought up Mausumi from her childhood, as her parents were mentally challenged.
“We live in Magura village in Ratua and Mausumi and Gautam met about three years ago and a year later they got married. However, my niece’s in-laws did not accept the marriage. I do not understand why my niece who was expecting and her husband would commit suicide. I have lodged a complaint against her father-in-law and brother-in-law. Let the police find out the actual reason for their deaths,” he said.
Malda police superintendent Kalyan Mukherjee said the police are investigating the case.
“A young couple has committed suicide by consuming pesticide. A complaint has been lodged with the Ratua police by the woman’s uncle. We are not yet clear about the motive behind the couple’s death. The police are also investigating whether they consumed poison themselves or someone had fed them the pesticide. The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem.”
