Kokrajhar, Oct. 23: The studentsí community in Kokrajhar today took out a rally against kidnappings and extortions in the region and demanded safe and unconditional release of Viky Pandit, a student of Commerce College, Kokrajhar, who was abducted by on Sunday.
Hundreds of students from various colleges, Bodoland University and members of NGOs participated in the rally with banners, festoons and placards. The rally was organised by the Post-graduate Studentsí Union of Bodoland University in association with the Studentsí Co-ordination Committee.
The rally started from Commerce College and passed through JD Road and RNB Road. It ended at Kokrajhar District Sports Associationís ground where a meeting was held. The students demanding safe release of Pandit also demanded a total crackdown on abductions and extortions. A memorandum was submitted to Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde through Kokrajhar deputy commissioner demanding an early and safe release of Pandit and end to extortions and kidnappings in the region.
The general secretary of the Post Graduate Studentsí Union, Bonjit Basumatary, and secretary of the Studentsí Union Commerce College Joyraj Narzary, demanded an early and safe release of Pandit on humanitarian ground.
They also urged the district administration to take stern action against extortion and abduction by any outfit or organisation.
Pandit, 19, was kidnapped from the Samgaon-Romanpara area under Kokrajhar police station.
