The extension of Dhanbad railway station, coming up on its southern side, is likely to be ready by December when passengers can hope to enjoy a host of amenities.
Ninety per cent work on the station complex, comprising a waiting hall, four ticket counters, enquiry counters and catering units, a roundabout and a parking lot towards Purana Bazaar, is over.
Only, the roundabout to be used by incoming vehicles and an approach road to the station are left. Construction had started in August 2011.
“Besides the roundabout, the newly built waiting hall, enquiry and ticket counters and catering units need to be furnished. The district administration will build the approach road,” said Dayanand, senior divisional commercial manager of Dhanbad division of East Central Railway.
Earlier, the railway board had issued a no-objection certificate to build the 1.5km approach road that will pass through its land in Joraphatak. But traders of Purana Bazaar objected to the plan.
Consequently, district and railway officials, and traders carried out a joint survey on Tuesday after which it was decided that the approach road would be built near DAV School grounds.
“A meeting with different stakeholders was held. The proposal to construct the road near DAV School grounds was discussed. A DPR will be prepared,” Dayanand said.
Once ready, the extension will make commuting easier for residents of Barmasia, Manaitand, Purana Bazaar, Joraphatak, Gandhinagar, Dhansar, Bastacola, Bhagadih, Ena Islampur, Jharia, Baniahir, Bhaga, Phusbunglow, Digwadih, Patherdih, Sudamdih, Bhowra, Chasnala and Sindri, who have to cross the congested Bank More bridge to reach the main station.
On an average, Dhanbad station, which was granted A1 status on August 21, witnesses a daily footfall of more than 20,000 passengers across its seven platforms. A roundabout with six-lanes leading to it is also coming up at the main station. There will be separate lanes for autos, taxis, private vehicles and VIP vehicles. Only, bitumen-laying work is pending, which is likely to resume after monsoon.
The tender process for setting up a food plaza has also been completed. Construction of a fast food unit is nearing completion. An escalator is also being installed on platforms 2 and 3.
