Cuttack, Oct. 22: Vigilance sleuths today raided houses of 29 councillors of the municipal corporation here in connection with the alleged bungling of relief materials meant for cyclone victims.
Thirty special teams of the vigilance department carried out the searches, a day after chief minister Naveen Patnaik ordered an investigation into the incident
The officials, however, remained mum about the seizures made during the raids.
Commissioner, Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), Nihar Ranjan Mohapatra, who was shunted out and his suspended deputy J.N. Kujur were also quizzed.
“I am totally innocent. We were distributing relief materials in a disciplined manner to the councillors, who for some unknown reasons started abusing the officials and there was utter chaos on October 13,” said Kujur.
Kujur said Cuttack-Choudwar MLA Pravat Ranjan Biswal and Mohapatra were present during the distribution of relief materials, which was done under instructions from mayor Saumendra Ghose. Today, all official records in connection with the purchase of food stock, list of councillors who got the relief materials, their exact quantity and cost were examined, vigilance inspector Kamal Panda said.
