Malda, Oct. 21: Eleven people were injured in a clash between two families over a plot of land during a salisi meeting at Gabtoli village in Kaliachak last night.
Police said one person had his nose severed and two others suffered bullet injuries. They have been admitted to the Malda Medical College and Hospital along with another injured person. Seven others are being treated at the Bangitola primary health centre in Kaliachak, 32km from here.
Police sources said 13 years ago, Ansari Momin had bought a .03acre plot in the area from his cousin Sohrab Moinin for Rs 78,000. Ansari did not register the land and Sohrab had been demanding money in the current rate before the registration.
Last night, a salisi was called to discuss the issue. As soon as the meeting began, Sohrab left only to return after 10 minutes with armed men and attacked those present.
Ansari’s brother Jamshed, 42, was shot through the right leg and genitals and Hasimuddin Momin, 55, Ansari’s other brother, had his nose severed.
In the counter attack led by Ansari, Sohrab was shot in the right leg and his wife Mabeda Bibi 48, daughter Asma Bibi, 30, and brother Jiat Momin, 48, were hacked with sharp weapons, the police said.
“Ansari had not paid the full amount. He had promised to pay the remaining sum during registration. I had said unless I was paid the right amount, I would not sign the papers. I demanded money according to the present rate. Ansari and his men attacked us,” Sohrab said from the hospital.
Malda police chief Kalyan Mukherjee said: “We have arrested seven persons, including Ansari and his son and Sohrab’s wife, daughter, son and two others. Both families have filed complaints with Kaliachak police.”
