Siliguri, Oct. 21: The Trinamul Congress today bagged the posts of the chairman of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation and the sabhadhipati of the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad.
In the election held to the post of the chairman at the SMC, Trinamulís Arindam Mitra became the chairman polling 14 votes against the Congressís 13.
The Congress and Trinamul have 14 councillors each and all of them turned up for the voting. According to the Trinamul councillor who presided over the meeting to choose the chairman, a Congress memberís vote became invalid because it was not cast properly. The Left Frontís all 17 members boycotted the poll.
In the Mahakuma Parishad, the rebel CPM member, Jyoti Tirkey was declared the sabhadhipati in the absence of a rival candidate.
Ruma Nath was the Congress candidate for the SMC post and todayís meeting to choose the chairman was presided over by Trinamul councillor of ward 35, Jaydip Nandi. ďA total of 28 councillors exercised their franchise and Mitra polled 14 votes. One of the councillors of the Congress failed to cast the vote properly and that was cancelled. Mitra won the poll 14-13,Ē Nandi told journalists.
The Congress mayor, Gangotri Datta, however, said the state municipal affairs department would be requested to reconsider the result and not to cancel the vote of her partyís councillor.
Trinamulís ascent to power at the mahakuma parishad was for the first time since the body was formed 25 years back. When the meeting was held to choose the sabhadhipati, three of the four CPM members were absent.
Jyoti Tirkey, the other CPM member and who had voted for the no-trust motion against the CPM sabhadhipati, was present along with three members who had switched from the Congress to Trinamul.
ďAinul Haque proposed the name of Tirkey as the new sabhadhipati and it was supported by another member Prerna Sinha. Following that, she was elected as the new chief of rural body,Ē said J.B. Subba, the assistant executive officer of the mahakuma parishad.
