Jalpaiguri, Oct. 21: A tusker damaged a primary school building on Ivhel Tea Estate near here last night and devoured rice which was stored in the kitchen for the mid-day meal.
According to Raghunath Lakra, a worker of the garden, local residents first spotted the jumbo around 10pm yesterday. “The lone tusker had entered the garden from the adjacent Murti forest. It went straight to the two-roomed school building and damaged it. We were terrified and all the 38 families in the garden ran for shelter at the garden hospital where we spent the night in fear,” he said. The tea estate is 45km from here.
“There were two gunny bags of rice, each weighing 25 kg in the school kitchen. The elephant tore both the bags and ate the rice, strewing the grains all over the place,” he said.
“We used two tractors and burst crackers to drive the elephant away this morning and after that a forest department squad arrived,” he added.
