Guwahati, Oct. 21: Vinita Rai of Tinsukia region clinched the only gold for the host state Assam on the inaugural day of the 44th Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) National Sports Meet for girls at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium here today.
Rai ensured the top place in the under-17 long jump event, leaping 5.18 metres.
Hosts Guwahati region managed to clinch a total of five medals, including three silver and two bronze, on the opening day. Meera Chettri won two silver medals in the under-19 1,500 and 800-metre events while Geeta Shah secured second place in the high jump event of the same age category.
Nir Kumari Ghale and Guma Thapa won a bronze medal each in taekwondo under-19 event for the home state. Sucharita Bose Roy of Silchar region emerged the fastest under-17 girl, dashing the 100-metre in 13.3 seconds. Mumbai region led the tally with 10 medals, including five gold, three silver and two bronze.
Women’s team: The Assam Cricket Association yesterday named the under-19 girls’ cricket team that will represent the state in the East zone limited-overs tournament here from October 23 to 31.
Football: Royal Club emerged champions in the Jorhat District Sports Association second division football tournament, beating Ruwards Club 5-4 via tiebreakers in the final at the JDSA ground in Jorhat today.
