Kokrajhar, Oct. 21: Assam BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal today held a meeting with party leaders in Kokrajhar to get first-hand information about its affairs in the Bodo belt ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
Talking to reporters at a news conference, the BJP state president criticised the Congress government for protecting illegal migrants in Assam.
Sonowal said the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government had betrayed the “sons of the soil” by admitting the illegal Bangladeshis in Assam.
Sonowal alleged that the chief minister had an internal understanding with AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal to put their respective sons in the Kaliabor and Barpeta Lok Sabha constituencies.
Stating that there was less development in the state during the Congress government, Sonowal said if voted to power, the BJP would work for the welfare and socio-economic development of the down-trodden in the state and in the BTAD.
He also said the party workers would visit every household in the villages and towns to enquire about their problems for increasing its support base in the BTAD.
The chief minister, who holds the home portfolio, has failed to protect life and property in the BTAD, he added.
He said the Congress government could not stop the extortion, kidnapping and killing in the Bodo belt.
Asked about the party candidate in Kokrajhar constituency, he said the decision would be taken at the party-level meeting in consultation with the party members.
State organising secretary Phanindra Sarma, Sobhog MLA Ranjit Das, Kokrajhar district BJP president Binati Basumatary and Kokrajhar district BJP co-ordinator Haricharna Boro were present at the meeting.
The BJP leaders and workers of Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang, Barpeta and Nalbari also attended the meeting.
