New Delhi: Tennis ace Sania Mirza is looking forward to continue her association with doubles partner Cara Black next season.
“I have taken a break for a couple of weeks and will start training again from the first week of November,” said Sania on Sunday. The star tennis player was in the capital to flag off the five-kilometre Max Bupa walk for health initiative.
Sania said she would like to continue with Cara as the Zimbabwean was focussed on just doubles. “I am looking forward to play with Cara with whom I am going to play next year. One of the main reasons for playing with her is that she focuses just on doubles.
“It is always good when you focus on one thing only. You can practice differently, do certain things differently,” Sania said. The Indo-Zimbabwean pair won the Pan Pacific tournament in Tokyo and the China Open in Beijing.
Sania, who had a fine season this year with five doubles titles, said it was one of the best seasons of her career. She also hoped to win more Grand Slams.
“People win one tournament and say they had a good year. I have won five this season. So, I am very happy. It was great feeling, especially to finish champions in the last two tournaments as they are just below the Grand Slam levels. So, it was great to win those tournaments and finish the year on a high,” said Sania.
Asked on Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement, the tennis star said she respected the legendary cricketer’s decision to hang up his boots. “In fact, no one wants him to retire. After all, he has served his nation in such a great manner for so many years. But all of us should respect his decision,” she said.
“I feel myself very lucky and honoured to have played in the same era as Sachin Tendulkar. I wish him all the best for his future,” Sania added.
Sania played with a number of partners due to various reasons this season. She partnered Bethanie Mattek-Sands to win the in the Brisbane WTA Tournament and Dubai Open before the American was injured. Sania then partnered Chinese Zheng Jie to win the New Haven Open at Yale.
Lauding the health walk initiative, Sania said: “More and more people are realising the importance of being fit and healthy. I personally believe that walking is a great way to stay fit and I encourage everyone to start walking as it is the easiest and the best way to be healthier.”
