Imphal, Oct. 20: Three Assam Rifles personnel were wounded when militants exchanged fire with an Assam Rifles foot patrol party in Kamjong sub-division of Ukhrul district this morning, official sources here said.
The United National Liberation Front (UNLF) while claiming responsibility for the ambush, also claimed that it had killed the three Assam Rifles personnel and injured some others.
Sources said there were an exchange of fire between a patrol party of the Assam Rifles and militants at Kangpat village in Kamjong sub-division of Ukhrul district, about 110km from Imphal around 9.45am.
All the injured personnel were shifted to Leimakhong army hospital in Sadar Hills of Senapati district.
The UNLF said the 241 unit of the Manipur Peoples Army (MPA), the military wing of the UNLF, carried out the attack.
The UNLF said one of the three groups of the 241 unit of MPA came across an Assam Rifles patrol party and the encounter took place. Members of the MPA were also injured, it said.
In another incident, police recovered an unexploded grenade from the private residence of T. Ranjit, deputy commissioner of Thoubal district, located at Pishum Oinam Leikai in Imphal East district this morning. The police believe the grenade was hurled by militants either last night or in the wee hours today.
In yet another development, five cadres of the Peoples Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive) surrendered to police commandos along with weapons yesterday. Sources said the cadres surrendered five AK rifles in Moreh, Manipurís border township in Chandel district. The surrendered cadres were brought to Thoubal district police headquarters today.
