Ranchi, Oct. 20: The state Congress is gearing up for a grand public rally to be addressed by party national vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Morabadi grounds in Ranchi in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.
A massive campaign has been launched across the state to ensure success of Jharkhand Navnirman Rally.
State Congress president Sukhdeo Bhagat said Rahul Gandhi was most likely to address a rally on Morabadi grounds on November 19, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
“He had given the date before the Assembly elections in four states were announced. The rally date may be deferred according to his convenience. As of now, we are keeping in mind only November 19 as the date and our awareness drives and other necessary preparations are going on in full swing,” he added.
The party has written to the Ranchi district administration, asking for permission to hold the rally at the spacious grounds and other amenities.
On November 19 or later, this is going to be the first time when the Congress will be organising a mass rally at the Morabadi grounds after Jharkhand was formed in November 2000.
“Rahul Gandhi addressed several public and party workers’ meetings in Ranchi in the past, but never at this venue,” said party spokesman Shailesh Sinha.
He added, “Of course, Sonia Gandhi did address election campaign meetings at the grounds in 1999 and 2004. But, this will be for the first time in 17 years when the Congress will hold a rally here.”
Congress workers have for long been demanding a public rally at this sprawling venue. The demand gained momentum after the Congress joined hands with the JMM and formed a government led by Hemant Soren.
But, Bhagat preferred to go slow about it. Instead of inviting the party’s central leaders to the Morabadi grounds, he took them around to different parts of the state apparently to feel the pulse of commoners.
“Even regional parties, like Ajsu, JMM, JVM and Left, have held several public meetings and rallies at the grounds. The entire country is now looking upon Rahul Gandhi with great expectations. People will turn up in large numbers on their own to listen to him. Rahul Gandhi’s visit will also infuse a new energy among party workers, especially youths,” argued senior Congress member Alok Dube.
Party insiders added that performances of the Hemant Soren government would also be analysed critically during Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Ranchi.
