Chandigarh/Calcutta: As Australia brought about an incredible four-wicket win at Mohali on Saturday, taking a 2-1 lead in the seven-match ODI series against India, Ishant Sharma turned out to be the villain for the hosts.
Australian captain George Bailey praised his bowlers, and singled out Faulker for applause. Dhoni, on the other hand, expressed concern about the lack of form of India bowlers.
Following are excerpts:
George Bailey: James Faulkner’s hitting was as good as I have ever seen. If I could learn to catch, we would have been chasing 20-30 less than the runs scored by Dhoni.
Our bowling has been fantastic, particularly after the performance in the last match.
Chasing more than 300 runs is always imposing. But we were quietly confident when we came off the field after India’s innings. There is not going to be any easy game in this series.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni: The way we bowled in the last few overs was very disappointing. It is an area of concern and it is getting worse.
Yes there was a bit of dew, but certainly it wasn’t like the last match. The bowlers need to back themselves, have a couple stock deliveries up their sleeves and use them when everything else has failed.
I think we could have batted better on a track like this. In fact, we were fortunate to get beyond 300. We kept losing wickets and at one time it looked like we would get around only 250.
While defending, we started off well. Ravindra Jadeja bowled really well in the middle overs. But, we need part-time bowlers to contribute more. The next match is in Ranchi. It will be good to go back to my hometown. It is a good place to play cricket and hopefully the spectators will enjoy the game.
James Faulkner (MoM): I definitely would not say that it was easy to bat out there. It was a great game of cricket.
I didn’t feel that I could get Ravichandran Ashwin out of the long boundary while he was bowling the carrom ball.
So, I wanted to knock him around. I thought if we could play Ashwin carefully, we could chase this down and it worked.
It was a great team effort. I made a pretty slow start, so I needed to do something. I think Adam Voges also found it quite tough early on, but he stuck around all the way through.
