Calcutta: The reversal against Dempo SC occurred at a time just as East Bengal were bracing to give themselves a shot for the AFC Cup final berth.
Such disappointing results do go on to have a damning effect over a side that gets ready for a major assignment in less than a week. No wonder players are still finding the defeat difficult to swallow.
A worried Edeh Chidi, who needs to play a major role on Tuesday against Kuwait SC, lamented that Thursday’s result has only made the job tougher for his team. “I understand it’s only the start of the season. But we are having problems.
“We may have lost just one match so far, but it appears to be like we lost 10. And that’s only because of our performance in the last game, which was simply a disaster. To me, it was really a shock to see all 11 players misfiring at the same time. We looked clueless,” the striker said after Saturday’s practice session at the Salt Lake Stadium.
He added: “Nonetheless, we need to look forward now as there’s a very, very important match coming up. Had it been last season, I would have been pretty much confident of a favourable result.”
Captain Mehtab Hussain, however, backs his teammates to do justice to their abilities and come hard at the Kuwaiti outfit since the entire nation would be expecting East Bengal to succeed on this occasion.
“The loss to Dempo is a thing of the past. One should remember that we have won many more matches over the last few seasons, while losses are few. So, we certainly fancy our chances.”
Coach Marcos Falopa, too, seconded Mehtab. “My players play more matches here and so are better acquainted with it. What we require to do is come up with better passing and covering,” he said.
