Calcutta: Coach Oscar Bruzon’s men didn’t have to do anything extraordinary on Saturday.
They just played smart, intelligent football and cashed in on Mohun Bagan’s elementary errors to register a 2-1 win in an Airtel I-League Round IV tie, here, at the Salt Lake Stadium.
Sporting Clube captain Boima Karpeh led from the front, scoring a brace, while Eric Muranda pulled one back for Bagan via a spot-kick towards the end. Of course, it’s still a little too early to predict where Bagan will end up at the end of the league. But for the moment, it seems to be getting only worse for the green and maroons.
If their performance in the previous three matches of this I-League was scrappy, it was simply pathetic on Saturday, as a result of which, their winless streak got stretched to four matches.
At present, Bagan (two points from four matches) are positioned fourth from the bottom, while Sporting Clube are placed at No.5 with seven points.
There’s very little coach Karim Bencharifa can do with such a squad at his disposal. To be precise, the present Bagan side, minus Okolie Odafe and central defender Aniyiche Echezona, is an easy prey for most teams in the competition.
Rubbing salt into Bagan’s wounds, Boima, off a through pass from Cajetan Fernandes, evaded both Aiborlang Khongjee and goalkeeper Sandip Nandy to give the visitors a lead in the 17 th minute.
Bagan played with three men in the upfront — Eric, Sabeeth and Katsumi Yusa (withdrawn forward) — but their scoring abilities were just not up to the mark. Besides, there were plenty of corners for Bagan in the first session and they couldn’t make use of any of them.
Katsumi did get one in after the half-hour mark. But the ball had sneaked in from underneath the side netting, marking Bagan’s misfortune.
Bencharifa brought in Manish Bhargav at the start of the second half in place of an extremely sloppy Adil Khan. But the move bore no fruit at all.
On the other hand, Sporting Clube, resorting to tactics expected from a team leading, made it 2-0 thanks to Bagan’s poor defending. Off substitute Dawson Fernandes’ through, Boima got the better of Wahid Sali and Nandy that more or less sealed the issue for the Goa outfit in the 78th minute.
