New Delhi, Oct. 19: The Congress today claimed Narendra Modi could not be taken seriously as a national leader as he had no understanding of history, had limited ideas of foreign policy, misrepresented facts on growth in Gujarat and did not show basic courtesy to the Prime Minister.
Although the party has been very critical of Modi’s persona and politics of late, it has so far not come out so strongly against the BJP’s Prime Minister candidate.
Spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury launched a virulent attack as she replied to Modi’s criticism of the Congress’s top leaders.
“The way he talks of the Prime Minister… does he know the spelling of dignity? He showed no respect for his seniors in the BJP. Hasn’t kept any one from his family with him…. He has nothing but obsession for chair,” she alleged.
She claimed Modi was “just fooling people”, had neither knowledge nor vision and spoke from prepared speeches.
“His concept of foreign policy is scary; muscle-flexing, kill, demolish… does he have any clue about the world? Just shooting Rambo-style. He said every state should have its foreign policy, bizarre ideas. He says nation first. It is not a slogan, he has made a sudden discovery that nation should be first... just fooling people,” she claimed.
Such a personal attack may not have the sanction of the top leadership but the Congress will have to face the music if its spokesperson crosses the limit maintained in political discourse.
Many Congress leaders have referred to Modi as “Feku” and questioned the figures he quotes to buttress his lofty claims. But Renuka went a step ahead, saying he misrepresented facts a hundred times a day and “is dreaming too much”.
Asked why the crowds followed him, she said: “If there is a circus in the town, people go to watch.”
Commenting on Modi’s claims on safety of citizens, she said: “The hard, cruel truth is nobody feels safe in Gujarat. We know how Vanzara kept Gujarat safe and peaceful. Ask Ishrat Jahan’s family how safe their daughter was in Gujarat.”
On his mission for a Congress-free India, she said: “He speaks whatever he wants… knows nothing of history, even the Congress role in the freedom struggle…. He says the Congress destroys India… by making such allegations, he is only exposing his stature.”
Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh too has been attacking Modi, but he has focused on economic indices like per capita debt liability in Gujarat being the highest and reduction in poverty the lowest.
